Splitting the Pot

Hi Nick, don't worry, this isn't about a party this time, hehehe...

Yesterday, at the regular Wednesday JG game, we finally had a comfortable venue which helped us escape the heat plus waiters to come to our beck and call. We had a great turnout of 40 players, old and new, so we were really excited since it made the pot fairly bigger (considering the buy-in is miniscule compared to other games), and of course, to make the sport of poker alot more competitive and fun.

As I patiently waited and made sure that the game ran smoothly, in time one table collapsed, then another and another till we were down to the final table. There were 9 players at the table... Let me gather my thoughts because I'm ready to burst with rage... phew... anyway, as soon as one player busted out, the WHOLE damn table made an agreement to split the pot! Here I am thinking, "Pot? What pot?? It's too small to matter!" They decided that the chip leader get the 2nd place pot, then the 7 of them split the rest evenly amongst themselves. For some reason, I felt insulted! We organized a nice tournament for everyone with a really great blind structure to boot to make the sport fair.. I felt that they just bastardized it.

Well, of course, knowing me and my uncontrollable mouth, I told them how I felt and one of them said, "Eh, well, we're all tired." But they continued to play for the 1st and 2nd place spots for seats to the championship game. Huh? Doesn't sound logical to me! Tired my ass. So... did they get greedy that they wanted to split the money?

Number 1> The chip leader was an idiot to agree to getting the 2nd place pot, if that was me I would've taken the 1st prize and let the rest of them split the rest. He ended up winning 1st place anyway so he was an idiot to agree, so, karma, he got what he deserved. He screwed himself over... wuss. You had the chip stack, use the power!!

Number 2> The buy-in for this game is only P300, we organize these games for the love of Texas hold'em poker, nothing more, we provide a service. So when it all got down to splitting the cash among the 7 of them, I gave them P800 each. WHAT.. A.. JOKE.. ! It wasn't even worth splitting for! Hell, if the pot was 1 million pesos, hey, I got no problems with that, that would be cool to split something significant, but for 500 pesos extra after all those gruelling hours, that felt like a personal slap to my face.

Number 3> In fairness, I did question my harshness of the matter, I leaned over to a friend and whispered, "Am I over-reacting by thinking that the whole final table raped everyone of their buy-in share?" He said, "Well, don't think of it that way, they didn't raped the buy-in, they raped everyone out of some final table action. Real poker players play for the glory." I stood corrected. Just because they did that, in my opinion, they killed the exictement for the rest of us.

And finally...

Number 4> Come on, the pot didn't really matter to these rich kids, they just felt that they were "being cute" for coming up with the idea.

Okay okay okay... I am being over dramatic and ultra sensitive about the issue, we poker players know that splitting the pot is a normal occurrence among pros and poker players in general. It is OKAY to do it, I have no qualms about it at all, I'm just upset at the situation and I did explain why. I'm a purist, at least I have the balls to play all the way til the last man stands... and as our group likes to yell out once in awhile, "For the glory!"

For me, whether it's a P100 buy-in or a P5,000 one, I'll play it like it matters. Play your best at all times. Because someone at that table, that P100 might mean it's his last money in his pocket and that he'll play his very best just to win it back. I'm not going to be that person at the table to treat the game like a joke because it may not mean as much. Give the players some respect and play like you mean it. And if you give the game the integrity it deserves, when that guy wins, that P100 will feel like a million bucks.

you are so right. i hate it when that happens. especially in tourneys! i mean, come on. u already set up a 4 way payout system and they go ahead and circumvent that with their agreement...

the worst offenders are those who try to guilt trip you into it - either "So we can start a new SNG na," or " Come on, dont be so greedy."

these people totally dont get the point. its about winning - period. Winning after a long-drawn out battle - that's what its all about.

You should put a NO-CHOP rule in the JG structure. I recently played in a tourney were i was chip leader and other players wanted to chop it but the organizer insisted we play it out.

Final table chop! What can I say... the people who are in it had the decision since it was not forbidden. However, for me... i wouldn't mind chopping it to a little outside the payout structure if it seemed like no one is playing and the money just goes around.

Another thing... I always encourage a chop especially if I am short stacked! Ha HA!

And for those of you who says play it to the end... I'm more than happy to play.

Sila yung greedy pag ganun. 'Di pa nga nananalo gusto na ng pera. :)

I'll agree to at the most a three-way split but 7 places for a few thousand is just... wrong.

Give them benefit of a doubt pls understand that these people love playing more poker, and since every PESO counts this means entry to TWO more future JGpoker tourneys. NO RAPE OCCURRED. It is not like they continued playing but colluded like what happened at ACF. Wouldn't you have preferred that the final ACF table chopped the 410K+ pot? The last 8 players would have gotten 51K+ each, rather than the prize breakdown as follows:
132,000
88,000
52,800
44,000
35,200
26,400
22,000
13,200
the 9th, 10th and 11th got 8800 each.

personaly, i thought it was a joke since the pot was to small to have any sane reason to chop it with. i could have understood if the top 5 places chopped it, since they deserved it by making it into the money. but 8-way? for a profit of 400 each? the better option was to play it out straight up, period.

if youre going to use the context of the ACF tournament, then what would have happened was that since 8 players chopped, out of 40, that would have meant that 20% of the field split the money. the finalt table in the ACF5K were all ITM, so in effect they were all winners. the JG game payed 5 places only, big difference.

so, if we use your logic at the ACF game, it would mean that 22 places will be paid and each one will get 20,000 more or less. Still a lot of money for some, but wouldnt that really suck? there is a reason why organizers prepare a strucutre for payout, IN INTEREST OF FAIRNESS.

what they robbed was the excitement and action that everyone who played deserved, and the effort that the organizers put into the game.

tell me, was it really neccessary to split it and win 400 pesos each? whats the point? I'm surprised the chip leader allowed it.

just my opinion.

might as well NOT put a payout structure and just chop the pot ALL the time, if we are gonna use your logic, right?

Are you outright stupid? Or do you think us organizers as fucking stupid??? What's the fucking point of having a tournament anyway?? Then let's have EVERYBODY split the pot...yay, everyone get their P300 back! DUHHHHHHH.
Hey, don't you even compare the small game to the big ACF game... how can you even make a comparison? The pay outs are so much larger than our measly P300 buy-in game.
You know what else? How the hell do pay-outs exist? Let's take a race for example, why race at all if placing won't matter? Let's just run around in circles like mindless idiots and give everyone get a medal. Oh what a joy.

That is why we have tournaments, it's for COMPETITION, for the GLORY. And NOT SOLEY based on the money!

As for your money issue... NOBODY, in their right mind, would like YOUR pay-out structure example. OF course the small chip stack would agree to that! Take to consideration the chip leader, he earned it, then some schmuck with, let's say, one chip, get EQUAL share to the prize pool... no way jose! People have to earn their place.

Remember, we had a small game, why have one then? Let's just play "imaginary" poker if you wanna have ideals like that.

I just stumbled upon your post and I have to agree that it really suck when players try to chop the prize.

It shows that they aren't confident in their short table game and end game to try to compromise and get a piece of the pool.

Tire, my ass. The longer I played last saturday, the more envigorated I got because it meant I was more into the money.

But that's just me.
